Smokey Bear Reading Challenge: Did you know that Smokey Bear is a New Mexican? The original bear cub who inspired the story was rescued from the Lincoln National Forest in the southern part of our state. This year is his 80th birthday, and we are helping him celebrate by participating in his Reading Challenge.

You can take part by registering on the VGPL Beanstack page:
vistagrandepl.beanstack.org . Once you have registered, start by taking Smokey’s Pledge. Then read 3 books on wildfire prevention or the environment, and also earn 4 activity badges to complete the challenge.  This contest begins April 1 and will run through the summer, until July 31.

Participants who complete the challenge win prizes in honor of Smokey. Thank you to the New Mexico State Library and the USDA for sponsoring this contest.

Early Literacy Calendars:

Caregivers of young children can download this resource for ideas on fostering early reading skills. The monthly calendar has ideas every day for promoting learning in fun and easy ways. You can also pick up a paper copy at the library in the Children's Section.

The NM State Library has made these available for free to all residents. Download your copy here:
