About the Event
From December through January, Vista Grande Public Library hosts John Ninnemann’s photography exhibit, “Archaeoastronomy: Sky Watchers of the Ancient Southwest.” The images provide a window into the sophisticated culture of the Ancestral Puebloans who once lived on the Colorado Plateau. It’s clear that the people tracked time, creating calendars based on sunrise/moonrise movement of the sun and moon in relation to both natural and human-caused features on the landscape. This knowledge was essential for agriculture as well as for guiding architectural orientation and ceremony. The exhibit documents sky-watching locations in Mesa Verde National Park, Chaco Culture NHP, Chimney Rock, and Yucca House National Monuments.
On Dec. 13, 12:30 – 2 pm, Ninnemann will provide a free presentation in the library’s meeting room about the photography and the sky watchers of the Southwest.
